Discover Southwold

Southwold is a much-loved seaside town on the Suffolk coast, with a traditional pier, a lighthouse in the middle of town and a long stretch of golden sand. It's compact and walkable, and it has a character all its own.

On the seafront

The Pier. Stroll out over the water to enjoy the views, then visit the quirky Under the Pier Show, a collection of handmade, wonderfully eccentric arcade machines. There's also a café for a cup of tea or an ice cream with a sea view.

The beach and beach huts. Walk along the promenade past the famous row of colourful beach huts, then settle onto the sand for a paddle, a picnic or a bit of people-watching.

In town

The Lighthouse. Southwold's white lighthouse rises above the rooftops and is easy to spot from almost anywhere in town. It's a great landmark for finding your way around.

The High Street and Market Place. Independent shops, galleries, bakeries and cafés make this a lovely place to browse at a leisurely pace.

Adnams. The local brewery is right in the town, so a pint of Adnams at one of the local pubs is a must. Many pubs are dog-friendly too.

Harbour and river

The Harbour. Enjoy fresh fish and chips by the water, watch the fishing boats and browse the fishermen's huts for the catch of the day, and NEVER forget to go Crabbing.

The Walberswick Ferry. Hop aboard the little rowing boat ferry across the River Blyth to the neighbouring village of Walberswick. It's a charming short trip, though it runs seasonally, so check times before you go.

Further afield

Dunwich Heath and Beach. Wide-open heathland and a shingle beach, perfect for a long walk.

RSPB Minsmere. One of Suffolk's finest nature reserves, ideal for spotting birds and wildlife.

Walks with your dog. The coast, marshes and heaths around Southwold offer plenty of paths to explore with four-legged friends.
